This paper (to appear as a chapter in a volume edited by T. Kurtz, Aspekte des Berufs in der Moderne) describes the changes in the educational and occupational system and draws conclusions on the changes in social inequality. It argues that in globalized societies where individuals, companies, and nation states compete increasingly with each other, social risks are individualized and shifted to the less powerful groups. In general this shift will increase social inequality in modern societies and produce a higher likelihood of social conflict.
